Weekend Roll: Dazed and Doughnutted
Lining up for the most recent CRCA race I remember getting to the start and seeing how stacked the field was. My teammate warned me that with power points awarded at the Tavern and Harlem Hill the first two laps would be fast and furious. After that, all I could think about was how good doughnuts would taste after the race.
The first two laps of the race were at a ludicrous speed. I sat in good position and watched my teammates move forward and organize themselves for the points.
On the third lap I managed to get into a break after Harlem Hill. I knew my teammates were working in the peloton, marking attempts others made bridge - I trusted my team and now they trusted me to get some points. Every time we hit Harlem Hill I gave it all I had, suffering for the greater good.
There was a solo break ahead of the group I was in but I managed to hold 2nd on every lap on Harlem Hill. It felt like doing Harlem Hill intervals with attack and tempo in between. Incredibly painful, but I managed to accumulate enough points on Harlem Hill to take 2nd overall for the day.
Afterwards, the doughnuts were good but made all the sweeter by the smiling faces of my teammates.
